The concept of extreme rurality refers to rural areas that are currently experiencing a severe demographic, social, and economic crisis that has persisted for nearly half a century. This article seeks to rethink the notion of backwardness traditionally associated with extreme rurality from the perspective of modernity, considering rurality as an otherness of progress constructed over the past two centuries. To this end, the paper offers a reflection on the valley of Tudanca, a territory that exemplifies extreme rurality and has been the subject of scholarly research for more than a century.
