This study examines the visual art –paintings and sculptures– created by the Catalan artist Josep Cañas in Mexico between 1948 and 1955, focusing on the representation of indigenous women in that country. This work, with its distinctly indigenist, anthropological, and ethnographic character, reveals the great ethnic diversity of the Mexican nation, manifested through detailed portraits and scenes of daily life. All of this within the framework of the artist's ethical and social commitment to the communities from the native peoples, where women were still triply marginalized: for being indigenous, for their gender, and for their poverty.
