Camilian Demetrescu was a Romanian painter, sculptor, writer and art theorist. Due to his dissatisfaction with totalitarian ideologies, he abondoned socialist realism to dedicate himself to abstract art. While exiled in Italy, he exhibited his works in various European cities, took part in the Venice Biennale and was technical curator of the X Quadriennale in Rome. His long career leaves an extensive cultural heritage. However, he is a little known figure in the current art scene. This paper presents the biographical profile of the Romanian artist linked to the historical-artistic contexts of his early creative stages.
