Portraits of Barranquilla’s historic center, Colombia: analysis and reflection on its urban and heritage challenges

The article provides an analysis and reflection on the current state of Barranquilla’s Historic Centre, a National Cultural Heritage site. The factors and elements that have contributed to and continue to cause its physical and environmental deterioration are identified and evaluated drawing on present-day observation of the area by the use of architectural and urban criteria, as well as on a historical analysis based on primary and secondary sources. We conclude that, despite some measures for its comprehensive recovery that have been implemented for some time, they have not been proven fully effective, thereby contributing to ongoing deterioration and to the erosion of its identity representation.
