Sacred architecture and nostalgia: count Edoardo Arborio Mella (1808–1884) and the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Turin (1882)

This article analyses the nineteenth-century nostalgia for the past and the assertion of the supremacy of the Middle Ages in sacred architecture through the vision of Count Edoardo Arborio Mella (1808–1884). It examines his approach to stylistic coherence and harmony, as well as his conception of the role of the architect. As an expression of his thought, the study focuses on the architectural project of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in San Salvario (Turin), through an analysis of its design elements.
