Four generations of Miguel de Cervantes's relatives lived in Valladolid at different addresses. Of these, only the house he lived in in the city in 1605, when the first part of don Quixote went up for sale, has survived. Many have championed this house since its existence became known: professors, journalists, and university students from Castile, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, such as José Estrañi, who was adopted by Santander; intellectuals from various backgrounds, such as Mariano Pérez Mínguez from Burgos and Narciso Alonso Cortés from Valladolid, until its public acquisition in 1912.
