The monument to naturalist Augusto González de Linares: commemorative art and scientific memory in Santander

At the turn of the twentieth century, Santander experienced significant cultural, scientific, and economic prosperity, expressed in the erection of commemorative monuments. Among them stands the monument to Augusto González de Linares (1845–1904), a pioneer of oceanography in Spain and founder of the country’s first marine biology station. Inaugurated in 1908 and created by the sculptor José Quintana, it combines bust, pedestal, and allegorical elements, such as the figure of Fame and a cushion with marine fauna. This study examines its artistic value, symbolic meaning, and the complex historical trajectory of the monument.
